10 year old Curly Cutie Going Natural

This is Ashley, she is 10 and has recently done the big chop!

I asked Ashley's mother, Stephanie, if she would allow us to share her natural hair journey.

She sent these great before and after pics and shared a little about going natural!

Stephanie said relaxer was not for Ashley's hair. She said the chemicals are too strong which caused breakage etc.

her mom said she started noticing breakage

She's been growing it out since December 2013 and finally got rid of the relaxed ends on September 18, 2014.
She wore braids and several other protective styles like buns, twists and crochet braids.

Finally decided to do the big chop to free her from any potential growth stunt that the relaxed hair may have been causing.

She's happy and excited about experimenting with products for her new found natural tresses.

They said they like the Cantu product line.

They also use Shea butter which makes the hair feel soft and more manageable!

She looks absolutely beautiful!
Her hair looks so healthy and soft!

Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us
Ashley and Stephanie!!

Hopefully they will continue to update us on her journey!!

Fulcrum Gallery, "Grandma and Me" by Gregory Myrick review

I recently ordered an art print from Fulcrum Gallery from their African American Art collection. When I saw the piece by Gregory Myrick entitled “Grandma and Me” I immediately had to have it. It depicts a grandmother reading a newspaper on the porch while her granddaughter braids her hair. I love this piece because it reminds me of time spent with my grandmother as a child. I also have a natural hair blog and I am crazy about hair so, this piece really was a great fit for my home.

There is something very special about taking time to do a love one’s hair, it’s an expression of love that is captured so perfectly in this piece. The little girl in pink it just so sweet with the bow at the ends of her braids. I bet grandma just finished doing her granddaughters hair. Grandma patiently sits and reads her paper as her granddaughter plaits her hair. So sweet! Read more about Art.

Once I had picked a piece it was really easy to order. I chose Plexiglas since I have very active teens in the home and didn’t want to take the chance of it being broken. My living room is done in deep red and gold colors so I chose a gold colored frame. I like the fact you can preview the matting and framing right on the web page so you know exactly what you are getting. I loved playing with different matting and frame until I found just the right look for my home.

The picture shipped very quickly and arrived in perfect condition. The piece was wrapped very well. When I opened it I was shocked and very pleased to see how large it is. The picture is even more beautiful in person.

Customer service as excellent, I was kept informed through every step of my order. Fulcrum Gallery also has an awesome 30 day, no questions asked, return policy!

Thanks so much to Fulcrum Gallery for allowing me to review their beautiful art!
All opinions are my own, this was not a paid review!

Design Essentials Review

Today I am reviewing products from the
Natural Hair Care Line By Design Essentials
Natural Curl Cleanser (SULFATE-FREE) is a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo for natural hair.
Gentle cleansing shampoo Soy Bean strengthens the hair
High quality natural ingredients provide moisture and softness
Emits an excellent shine Ideal for all curl types
Our Experience:
This is one of those products I love that can be used for different curl types. I am a type 2b/c, parts of my hair are very curly and parts are nearly straight. Milah is closer to a 4 b/c, like me she has different curl types in her hair. We both can use this awesome sulfate free shampoo on our hair types and have our curls come out looking lovely and moisturized.
Very Nice Clean Scent.
(for more on curl types see Design Essentials hair chart Here)
DE Natural Almond & Avocado Leave-In Conditioner is a lightweight, non-sticky moisturizing conditioner with nourishing botanicals and Vitamin E for hair health and detangling. Penetrates quickly. Instantly soften hair and smooth the cuticle for easy detangling. Natural oils improve manageability and provide luminous shine.
Our Experience:
Milah smoothed this through her hair and found that it made detangling with her wet brush much easier! This leave in conditioner makes the hair feel so soft but it's light so it doesn't weigh hair down. It smells a bit like sweet tarts to me... I can't quite pinpoint it but it smells great!
Natural Curl Stretching Cream defines curls in natural styles for curly to tightly coiled hair types. Adds definition to extremely textured hair
Botanicals provides excellent moisture and intense shine
Smoothes and conditions textured hair Creates beautiful frizz controlled curls
Our Experience:
This cream helped her curls look less frizzy and more defined. It's a good texture, close to that of pudding... add a bit of shine to dull looking curls! Helps curls to pop!
Natural Defining Creme Gel defines curls in natural styles for wavy to tightly curled hair types. Lightweight Gel Defines and separates curls
Botanicals provide excellent moisture and control frizz
Strengthens hair with a radiant shine Provides a medium to firm hold
Our Experience:
This stuff smells like pudding to me, so delish! Milah did not want to wear twists this first week of school but I did do some twists in the back just to see how this Crème Gel would work and it does make some really pretty soft twists. It's not super heavy or to sticky so it would be perfect for a twist-out or braid-out or Bantu knots.

DE Natural HONEY AND SHEA Edge Tamer is a moisturizing, firmer-hold edge control gel designed for curly to coily hair that securely lays down the hairline.
Honey and Shea Butter add nourishment
Adds Brilliant Shine
Longer lasting, firm hold
Our Experience:
We have affectionately nicknamed this "hair magic"! Milah has some short hair around her edges but she LOVES to wear a high bun. Till now we had never found anything that really would hold her edges and also help the very front and back of her hair stay slicked down. I use this to help slick some of her hair back and also lay her "baby hair" or edges down. It works so well!! WE LOVE IT! Our jar is almost gone and we will be purchasing more I the near future! We liked all of the design essential products we tried but I have to say this one was our favorite!!
