"Boricubi" the art of Jolín Miranda review and giveaway

When I came across the Boricubi shop on Etsy I instantly fell in love with these adorable pieces of Natural Hair art!

Jolín Miranda uses mixed media to create her one of a kind pieces. Her material consist of: Acrylic Paint, Gel Medium, Copic Markers, Gel Pen, Pitt Pen, Pattern Paper, molding paste and book pages. The art piece we received s a 6x6 media canvas on a thick wooden frame that can be hung on a wall or I would even use it to stand on a shelf or dresser.

Her collection includes pieces for all ages including some geared to younger curly cuties! Her pieces include different hair types and colors and would make an awesome gift for any Natural Haired lady (or kiddo)! She also makes coin purses, purses, and tiles featuring her art.

I wish my camera had caught the vibrant colors of this piece better but the flash caused a glare

**Where did the term BORICUBI come from? It is a portmanteau of the words "Boricua" (Her Puerto Rican mother) and "Cubiche" (Her Cuban Father)**

About the Artist:

Jolín Miranda was born in Southern California. She is a self-taught artist. She is the daughter of a Cuban father and Puerto Rican mother. As a young girl she did not always love her Kinky Curl hair. She grew up with the concept that her hair fell into the category of "Pelo Malo," which means "Bad Hair" in Spanish. She now has a daughter of her own and finds it extremely important to teach her on how to embrace her Natural Beauty. Recently she has started to make adorable Mixed Media Canvases that inspire the Natural Hair Woman. These are perfect to display in your bedroom, bathroom, desk, vanity or wherever you choose. They are a constant reminder that regardless of what anyone says, your Natural Hair is beautiful!

Do you want to win a piece of your own from Jolín Miranda?

One lucky reader will win the "Keisha" coin purse pictured above.

This super fantastic faux leather purse has been revamped with hand painted acrylic paint and decoupaged with a print of my art. (Image is on both sides of purse). This purse is One-of-a-Kind.

Obia Natural Haircare review and giveaway!

Keeping with our mission of better hair health
we are reviewing some great hydrating and moisturizing products from Obia Natural Haircare!

Jamilah started out with straightened hair
(for the very last time! more on that in my next blog!)

Product #1

  Coconut & Shea Shampoo Bar

(our bar was white in color this picture is from the website, I did not get a chance to snap a pic before J jumped in the shower with it)

This rich moisturizing shampoo will leave your hair soft, conditioned, and hydrated.  Shea butter deeply moisturizes and repairs damage to hair and scalp, while coconut oil protects hair from heat and chemical damage

Jamilah washed her hair with the Coconut & Shea Shampoo bar. When she first saw the bar and heard it was shampoo she seemed all confused lol. She was surprised however, at how simple it was to use. She first wet her hair completely then use the bar directly on her hair until her whole head was lathered. She washed from root to tip gently moving the shampoo through her hair being careful not to cause tangles and knots. She made sure to cleanse her scalp well, massaging the Coconut and Shea shampoo into her scalp with her finger tips and not her nails. She then rinsed her hair, she said it rinsed out very easily.

Her hair did not feel like it often does with a typical shampoo, it was not dry and wasn't badly tangled. We both liked the smell and convenience of the bar shampoo and were impressed with the ingredients! It was a shock to see such a great lather from something that is sulfate free and full of natural oils!!

(Ingredients: Saponified Oils of Coconut, Palm, Castor bean, Safflower; Shea Butter, Vegetable Glycerin, Purified Water, Rosemary Essential Oil, Sorbitol, Soybean protein, Sorbitan Oleate, Fragrance)

Here is J after her shampoo!

As you can see you can already see her curl pattern (particularly in the bottom section) before we did any detangling or combing of any sort!

Product #2

Directions for use: Use on wet or dry hair.  Rub a quarter size amount between your hands and apply to your hair.  Style as desired.  pH balanced Curl Moisture Cream seals in moisture and minimizes frizz by smoothing and closing the cuticle.

I took a about a quarter sized amount as the directions suggested.... I had to control myself as I tend to use too much product and t always seems like the suggested amount is not enough for Jamilah's hair. I was very surprised to find this was not the case with the curl moisture cream! I smoothed the cream through her hair and de-tangled it all with my fingers!
The smell is nice, not too strong or too sweet just fresh and nice! I liked that you can use this cream to seal in moisture without having to use heavy oils. Very good cream!!

By the way every product has at least 1 video about the product and how to use it!

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol, Vitis vinfera (Grape seed) Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Argania spinosa (Argan) oil, Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Arctium lappa (Burdock Root), Lavandula officinalis (Lavender) Oil, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Glycine soya (Soybean) Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Oil, Fragrance (Parfum).

Product #3

Directions for use:  Use on damp or wet hair.  Apply a generous amount on the palm of the hand and rub hands together.  Style hair as desired.  Use to define curls, to smooth edges, or to aid in up-do styles.  Curl Enhancing Custard defines and conditions hair leaving it soft, shiny, and deeply moisturized.

I smoothed this through Jamilah's hair and used a Denman brush to smooth her hair and define her curls. I used a bit more of this product than I did the cream, ok quite a bit more lol! I used it around her hairline to both moisturize and help hide her broken edges in the front. At first I was like "what did I do?" her hair had a little bit of white to it in areas where I seemed to use a little too much....but no worries....it dried completely clear!!
The custard really made her curls pop back up! awesome!

This product has a gentle clean scent also. very nice!

Ingredients: Purified water (Aqua), Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Vitis vinfera (Grape seed) Oil, Argania spinosa (Argan) Oil, Carbomer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Vegetable Glycerin, Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Xantham Gum, Fragrance

Product #4

Use daily to moisturize your hair and scalp, or to refresh your style. Infused with argan oil, rose oil, and vitamin E

I used this on Jamilah's hair both after pumping up her curls and putting a headband on and again the next day to refresh her hair. This spray has a very light rose scent to me but it's not strong or over-powering. I really like it. The spray is light and refreshing to the hair. Unlike some of J's detangling type sprays that can be thick and weigh hair down this product is light and helps boost her curls while also adding hydration. So you're not only using these products to style but also treat the hair at the same time.... which Jamilah's hair surely needs right now!!

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Vegetable Glycerin, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Oil, Rose Oil, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Soybean Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Fragrance (Parfum).

Here she is!!! Her hair looking healthy, curly, shiny!!

products are natural, cruelty free and vegan!
(very important to Jamilah as she is a vegetarian!)

The Diva Bonnet Review and GIVEAWAY!!!!

Part of keeping your hair in good condition or getting your hair back into good condition is keeping down friction on the hair. Satin bonnet and pillow cases are an awesome way to cut down friction on the hair while you sleep, avoiding hair damage. Satin bonnets can also help preserve styles such as braids and twists by cutting down friction which can cause them to become frizzing looking and lessen wear time.

We found the coolest Satin bonnets at:

They call it upcyled because they take the scraps that would otherwise be thrown away or used a filling and transformed them, giving a beautiful twist on their age old products. Each of the pieces from their upcyled line is special, and some one of a kind...depending on how much of the scraps are left! This Bonnet is reversible and lined with satin giving you practical function with sophisticated flair.

Jamilah says her Bonnet makes her feel Luxurious!! :)

This bonnet is super comfy, reversible and has a very comfortable rim that does not make crease marks in the forehead!
