CURLS step 2

Step 2 of The 4 Step Sustainable CURLS™ Campaign

You can’t change what you don’t understand…Knowledge is power – Sharing the wealth!

EDUCATE

Did you know….

  • Recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions by significantly saving the amount of energy needed to manufacture the products that we buy, build and use
  • Recycled materials account for 40% of the world’s raw materials and is critical to our future sustainability
  • While plastics decompose, they can release potentially harmful substances into the surrounding ground water and soil, affecting future generations
  • Letting your faucet run for five minutes uses about as much energy as letting a 60-watt light bulb run for 14 hours
  • Every year, an estimated 706 million gallons of oil enter our planet's oceans: By far the greatest source of spilled oil is households. Used Motor Oil - accounts for 363 million gallons in our oceans! 50% of Americans change their own motor oil, but only 1/3 of that oil is collected and recycled. 2/3 are dumped down drains or spilled on driveways and onto streets. One typical 5 quart oil change improperly dumped can contaminate millions of gallons of freshwater.

Simple Mohawk

So J got the Mohawk she wanted just in time for the fair. I simply divided her hair down the center front to back and braided both sides to the middle, secured them together and picked out the top. EASY!! She got soo many compliments at the fair and she LOVES rocking a Mohawk.
In case you were wondering her natural hairline is quite far above her ear....that's not breakage :)

A white girl POV on natural black hair

I went to a family event over the weekend and noticed that one little girl whose hair is usually stick straight with relaxer. Her hair was all curly and pretty....I complimented her and said how nice it looked and her family broke in saying that she needed a relaxer. I know it's none of my business but I said "Please don't her curls are just so pretty" They looked at me like "what does this white girl know about black hair"

Ok I'm no artist but I can go to a museum and fall in love with a beautiful work of art.

I feel the same way about natural hair....which by the way I have raised 2 children who have very textured biracial hair and I am also responsible for my husbands hair care. Do I have black hair, no. But I love it....especially in it's natural state. I love spending time de-tangling, braiding, twisting and caring for it...I love new designs and like art I admire a beautiful head of natural hair.

Like anything else in life...I can't tell anyone what to do....But I have seen the damage relaxers and chemicals can do...I want to educate other white women raising black and biracial kiddos on the risk of relaxing and the beauty of natural hair and how to care for it the right way...

I welcome your tips and opinions, Like I always say I am not expert but for a "white girl" I do know a lil something ;)

Peace a blessings ~ Jennifer

Criss Cross & Box braids

I have done this style on here before... so the directions are a few blogs back. J REALLY wanted a mo-hawk but we have a funeral tomorrow and I wanted a more conservative look.

I criss-cross braided the top...did a braid across the front to hide her bald spot and box braided the back using gold and black beads.

Kinky-Curly Giveaway!!

I am so excited to be offering this giveaway from an AWESOME company who is giving back in such a huge way!! Talk about HAIR WITH PURPOSE!!!

A portion of their profits from each sale at KINKY-CURLY will be donated to Charity:Water
Check out Charity water HERE

In Shelley's words...

As the owner of Kinky-Curly I am always telling my customers how important water is. I say how water is the ultimate moisturizer for our hair, how we should drink 8 glasses a day and how we should wash our hair a least once a week.

Most of us don't spend too much time thinking about water. For most of us it is always there when we need it to wash our hair, to take a relaxing bath, or to do our laundry. We can buy it purified, sparkling, infused with minerals, or even flavored with vitamins.

But for a billion people on the planet, it's not. Millions of women and children walk hours each day to get water from muddy ponds and rivers. And much of that water is infested with parasites and leeches.
In these countries the clean water runs in lakes under their homes and village. But they don't have the drilling equipment or the money to reach it.

Kinky-Curly has teamed up with Charity:Water to raise money to build wells in developing nations. They spend 100% of the money directly on the water projects. When the projects are complete, every dollar is tied to village and all the wells are posted on Google Earth.

$20 can provide one person with clean, safe drinking water for 20 years

$100 can give a family of 5 clean water for 20 years

$5000 will build a freshwater well in a village and provide 250+ people with clean drinking water.

A portion of our profits from each sale will be donated to Charity:Water. We encourage you to also donate directly to this worthy cause so together, we can make a dent in the global water crisis.

Awareness

Are you Aware? Open Your Eyes…look at the facts, decide to make the change.

Did You Know?

•Over 30 tons of waste are produced for every one ton of product that reaches the consumer
•98% of those products that do reach the end consumer are thrown away within 6 months.
•It takes around 450 years for a plastic bottle to degrade.
•You absorb up to 60% of any substance applied to your skin, you could absorb up to 4.4 pounds of man made chemicals through your body every year- that's not healthy.
•For those curly girls still relaxing their hair...Sodium Hydroxide is the strongest type of principal chemical used in some chemical relaxers because it provides the most long lasting and dramatic effects. However, this same sodium hydroxide is found in drain cleaners, which well demonstrates the strength of this chemical.

Plats

When I want J's hair to be done but not really take a lot of time braiding I plat her hair.

I like to divide her hair in half from ear to ear. Then I divide the sections into whatever pattern I'm feeling like that day. I put on a black elastic then a ball pony-tails holder...wish I knew what they are called, I always refer to them as "hair balls" lol. I usually end my plats by wrapping the hair around a barrette and closing it but this time I decided to bead the ends and use little white elastics. It's simple....doesn't take long and can last her up to a week.

Braided Hairstyle at Issue in protests over dress code

http://www.nytimes.com/1987/09/23/garden/braided-hair-style-at-issue-in-protests-over-dress-codes.html?pagewanted=all

Braided Hair Style At Issue in Protests Over Dress Codes
By E. R. SHIPP

FOR the first two weeks that she wore her hair in tight braids swept into a pageboy silhouette, Cheryl Tatum, a restaurant cashier at a Hyatt hotel in suburban Washington, received compliments. Then a supervisor told her to pull the braids into a bun to comply with Hyatt's dress code.

She complied, but three weeks later the personnel director at the hotel -the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, near the National Airport - told her to unbraid her hair, saying that Hyatt policy barred ''extreme and unusual hair styles.'' Ms. Tatum, who is black, refused. She lost her job and is now pursuing a discrimination claim before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Sydney M. Boone, a black telephone operator at the Grand Hyatt Washington in the downtown section of the capital, wore a wig over her braids when told that her hair style violated company policy. She, too, has filed a discrimination complaint with the commission.

While no one knows how many similar instances have occurred, lawyers, hair stylists and others across the nation said in interviews that black women were increasingly being forced to choose between a job and African-influenced braided hair styles. Women and stylists contend that braids offer practical and healthful advantages, but some employers say that such styles do not fit their corporate images.

Sides back, front to the side braids

This is braided back on the sides to the middle then the crown was braided to the side....used some black and gold beads and some gold hearts on the end
She has quite a few black and gold shirts to match this style :)

Braided Mo-hawk

I was about to take J's hair out today, these braids have been in about two weeks and are looking pretty fuzzy but I decided to snap some quick pics before taking them out.

J has been wearing al ot of 80's bright colors lately so I made her accessories bright! This is the same basic mohawk I did a few blogs back but instead of leaving the hair out I braided the top and put 10 clear beads on each braid.

And here's where I took her braids out to wash and get ready for her next style!!!

The politics of hair

I didn't realize that hair could be such a negative thing, until yesterday. My husband has been wanting a particular job for quite some time. He has a friend working at the particular place who said that he was pretty sure after his recommendation that he would get the job. We were very excited. Hubby dressed up for the interview in dress pants, button down shirt and dress shoes. He was looking sharp. I braided his hair in very small conservative, neat rows. No zig zags or anything crazy for the interview.

The interview seemed to go very well so imagine our surprise when they called Monday and told him he did not get the job. His buddy went and asked the person in charge of hiring why he didn't hire him. The man said he had a great interview but didn't get the job because of his braids. AHHH He knew he'd have to cut his hair if he was given the job but didn't figure he should have to cut his hair for a job he didn't even have yet.

I don't think it's right that he has to cut off his hair to get a job, as long as he keeps in neatly braided back, why do they care? Women at this job can have any length of hair. At the same time, we need income so if that's all he can find right now is a job that requires him to cut off his hair, he will. It's still a shame really!!! He loves his long hair, and I love caring for it.

Who made these rules of what everyone should look like?

Here is a piece of an interesting petition I found online concerning men with long hair:

http://www.petitiononline.com/hairlong/petition.html

Both the banking industry and the estate agency industry will not hire men with long hair and this is perfectly legal. Not only is it legal, there has been legal precedence set. In the case of Smith v Safeway 2000, a man who was dismissed from his job on the deli counter because his hair grew too long to be kept under his hat, took a claim of sex discrimination against his employer. The case reached the Court of Appeal who ruled that this did not constitute sex discrimination. They stated that an appearance code which applies 'conventional standards' will be seen to apply an even handed approach between the sexes and not to be discriminatory. In this case Mr Smith had argued that the appearance code was discriminatory because to impose a permanent change of hairstyle would mean he would also have to wear his hair short outside of work. The Court of Appeal held that a restriction which extends beyond the workplace is a factor to be taken into account in considering whether the rule treats one sex less favourably but is not conclusive by itself.

Why is the establishment so against long-hair, or protecting the HUMAN RIGHTS of men who have long-hair? There are that if the law was changed, then it would open up cases for men wishing to wear skirts, make-up, facial piercings, etc. This is incorrect. All of these things can be removed/changed for the course of the work day. If someone is forced to cut their hair, then they can't magically grow it back when the leave work. This affects the individual both inside and outside the work place.

Also, the term “conventional standards” is erroneous. Who sets the conventional standard. Who decides this. In young males today, both ear-rings and eyebrow piercings seem to be more and more commonplace. Could a young male demand that he be allowed to wear these whilst working for a bank? Perhaps he should... after all, it is a “conventional standard”. Do these institutions demand that women grow their hair. After all, isn't it “traditional” that men have short hair and women long hair?

Jane Carter Solutions

Here is what the website has to say:

After 20 years of experience in working with every different hair texture imaginable and frustrated by not being able to find natural based products that worked effectively for everyone, I decided to start The Jane Carter Solution.

Our products are specifically designed for dry hair. Including curly, wavy, straight, relaxed, natural hair, color treated and locked hair. We use ingredients derived from nature, natural butters, and certified organic essential oils that make your hair vibrant and alive again. Like the thousands of satisfied customers that use our products on a regular basis, I am sure that you will get great results from every use.

I received samples of three products from Jane Carter Solutions

Nourish & Shine
the claim: "Oh My Gosh...You have never in our life experienced a product like this! We Blend all natural vitamins and essential oils to create this incredible hair nourisher. It completely melts in your hair and adds amazing shine. It never leaves your hair feeling greasy! Nourish & Shine helps to reduce dryness on the skin and scalp. Be Careful: daughters and husbands are known to steal this product from you, so order two and one for you."

Ingredients : Shea butter, Kokum butter, Illippe butter, Mango butter, Vitamins A, D, & E, pear and grapefruit essential oils.

My experience: I like this product, it has the sweet and tangy smell of grapefruit that the kids really enjoyed. The product is a solid but melts really quickly in your hands. I use shea butter quite often and I found this product to be a lighter oil and I could see how it would work well in someone's hair that is not quite as textured as my childrens hair.

Nourish & Shine melts really easily into the hair and scalp and did not make my family's hair feel greasy. I ran a little product through the ends of my hair where it tends to be a little dry and my hair looked shiny but not greasy.

Revitalizing leave-in conditioner

The Claim: If you are looking for a light product that is ideal for de-tangling, this is the one! Revitalizing Leave In Conditioner seals in vital panthenol and humectants and acts as a protective barriers against heat styling and sun damage. Use it daily as a rehydrator. Mist your hair in the morning and evening. It’s also great for flat ironing and roller setting fine hair. This product is a must for every bathroom. Revitalizing Leave In Conditioner does the job for you!

Ingredients : Purified Water, Extracts of Aloe Vera, Comfrey, Watercress, Myrrh, Panthenol, Essential Oils, Anthemis Noblis Flower, Symphytum OfficinalLeaf, Equisetum Arvense, Urtica Dioica (Nettle), Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Lawsonia Inermis (Henna), Butoxyethenol, Polyquarternium11, Soyamid DEA, PPG30, Cetyl Ether, Oleth-3 Phosphate, Hydantoin, Glyceryl caprylate, methylisothiazolinone (preservative)

My experience: I received this sample in a bottle but it's meant to be sprayed into the hair. Luckily, I had a small spray bottle left from another product so I could try this sample out. I sprayed this product into my hair and it was super easy to detangle. It's a very light detangler so unlike many products it did not make my fine blond hair look greasy. When I sprayed the products into my daughter's damp hair I noticed it did help detangle but not as much as the products I am used to. I really like the smell and the natural ingredients so I was really hoping this product would work for the whole family. If your child has hair that is not highly textured than this would be a great detangler it just didn't work as well for my daughter's hair type.

I believe my daughters hair is somewhere around 4a, this is not typical for a lot of b/w biracial children but her father is from South Sudan and she tends to lean towards his hair texture.

Wrap and Roll

Great for controlling unruly curls. Wrap & Roll adds control and shine, dries fast and clean, with no stiffness or leftover residue!

The Claim: Wrap & Roll is the best soft mouse, setting and wrapping product available. It dry’s clean, and soft without any residue. It is great for air drying color treated, and damaged hair. The natural glycerides, essential oils and moisturizers leave your hair soft and shiny. For setting or wrapping, dryer time is cut in half. Apply Wrap & Roll liberally to wet hair, and then let it dry naturally, or wrap/set as usual.

Ingredients : Deionized Water, Anthemis Noblis Flower (Camomile), Symphytum Officinal Leaf (Comfrey), Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail), Urtica Dioica (Nettle), Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf, Humulus Lupulus (Hops), Lawsonia Inermis (Henna), Certified Organic Essential Oils: Lemon, Grapefruit, Coco-Sultaine, Glycerine, Glyceryl caprylate, methylisothiazolinone (preservative)

My experience: I don't like to see textured hair being described as "Unruly" it's just one of those things that bother me. I don't think we can give our children a positive self-image when we describe their hair as "Unruly" "Unmanageable" etc... So when I saw this description on the Jane Carter Solution site I was a little disappointed. "Great for controlling Unruly Curls"

My second issue is that this product was meant to be a foam applied to hair before setting but yet again it was sent to me in a small plain bottle that does not allow the product to foam. I did not have any foaming bottles small enough for me to sample this product.

OVER ALL:

Though the samples were a little difficult to apply and some products were not right for my children's hair type this is not meant to be a negative review. I do like Jane Carter's philosophy. I like that the products are made with some awesome natural ingredients. I would love to try more of the products in the future to give you a better idea how the products work over all.

The "Ask Jane" Blog has some great hair advice and explanations of why natural products work best on the hair. I highly recommend you check it out!

Aubrey Organics, Honeysuckle Rose

I have been using Honeysuckle Rose Shampoo from Aubrey Organics for about a month now. I love the fact that I can use this shampoo on every member or the family with good results. The scent is very nice, natural, not so perfumed that the males in the house find it too scented. This shampoo cleans well without overdrying and leaves the hair feeling soft.

Here's what Aubrey Organics has to say:

For Dry, Brittle Hair

"The sweet smell of success for your hair. Achieve ultra-softness and manageability with this moisture-intensive shampoo. Restorative herbal emollients rehydrate hair fiber to overcome dryness and brittleness and leave hair irresistibly fragrant and silky-soft. Also recommended for bleached or highlighted hair. "

Many shampoos seem to clean the hair very well and make it feel very soft, AT FIRST. After awhile the shampoo starts to make the hair look dull and weighed down and you have to use a clarifying shampoo to remove all the waxy residue that the shampoo left behind, you hair turns back exactly the way it felt before. All the while you thought that the shampoo was mending your dry or damaged hair but all it was doing was waxing the hair to keep the damaged cuticle stuck down so the hair appeared softer, temporarily.

This is NOT something that is going to happen with Aubrey Organics shampoo!

The only thing I have noticed was that my daughter, J started getting dry scalp again. I bought a scalp moisturizer with tea tree oil and sectioned her hair into small sections and moisturizer her scalp and the problem was gone! Tea tree oil is awesome for dry scalp and dandruff problems!

INGREDIENTS: Deionized Water, Coconut Oil-Corn Oil Soap, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein (made from organic, non-GMO soybeans), Organic Aloe Vera, Carrageenan, Honeysuckle Oil, Organic Rosa Mosqueta® Rose Hip Seed Oil; Extracts of Fennel, Hops, Balm Mint, Mistletoe, Camomile, Yarrow, Ginkgo, Ginseng, Angelica, Chrysanthemum, Magnolia, Horsetail, Coltsfoot and Forsythia; Vegetable Glycerin, Sweet Almond Oil, Linoleic Acid (Vitamin F), Vitamin E, Aloe Vera Oil, Macadamia Nut Oil, Organic Rosemary Oil, Organic Sage Oil, Aubrey's Preservative (Citrus Seed Extract, Vitamins A, C and E).

Mohawk

My daughter's favorite hair site "Beads, Braids & Beyond" has featured some fierce mohawks this month so of course J wanted me to try one on her. I have never done a Mohawk or FRO-Hawk as she calls it before so.... I dunno...I used Beads, Braids and Beyond for inspiration and this is what we came out with

In the works :)

I haven't blogged much lately because I have been busy trying out some new stuff...I thought I'd update you and after I have used these products for a bit I'll be able to review them

First I hopped over to Amazon and Ordered this book

"No Lye: The African American Woman's Guide to Natural Haircare"

Reviews From Amazon:

Review
"No Lye is a degree granting, home study course in the mystique, magic and proper care of black women's hair. What a blessing!"
--Iyanla Vanzant, author of In the Meantime

"No Lye is not an ordinary how-to book. Tulani Kinard's study on African American Natural hair care is based on her philasophical belief that beauty and self-love is also healthy and biologically sound. A must-read for every African-American women, man, girl, and boy--at least!" --Bernice John Reagon
-- Review

I ordered Honeysuckle Rose Shampoo from Aubrey Organics thanks to recommendations from Happy Girl Hair :) Thanks Joyful Mom! We have decided to go Sulfate Free!!

I forgot to order the conditioner :(

I also ordered Carols Daughter Hair Milk

The website says:

Even women whose relationship with their curls is harmonious most of the year find themselves at war when the mercury and humidity rises. The lush blend of nut oils and shea and cocoa butters in Carol's Daughter Hair Milk fortifies coarser, tighter curls, which tend to be the most parched and vulnerable to breakage." - Stephanie Tweito Jacob, O The Oprah Magazine

See why HAIR MILK has been touted by The Oprah Magazine, Tyra Banks, BET and it has grown from a cult favorite to a recent PHENOMENON! This light, fast-absorbing lotion for the hair is made with essential oil of lemongrass to stimulate natural oil production. Vitamins C and E provide an antioxidant boost while a hint of lily of the valley fragrance perfumes hair beautifully. Hair Milk is ideal for defining natural curls and giving hair loads of shine and bounce.
Benefits:

Lemongrass stimulates scalp circulation and adds luster to dull hair.
Sweet almond oil, a natural nut oil that is high in fatty acids and easily absorbed by the scalp

Can't wait to try it!

At a local store I picked up some sweet almond oil for skin care

I ordered Shea Butter from Amazon for skin and hair

and also picked up some unrefined shea butter from Ghana at a local store

I melted down some Shea Butter with some coconut oil to use of hair and skin and found these cute little containers to store them in. I plan to buy some essential oils and create different scents, like lavender for a relaxing massage or almond for a sweet smelling hair treatment.
Thanks for the idea Beads, Braids and Beyond

Both websites I mentioned above also have recently talked about organization...I had a bunch of little baskets filled with hair decorations and tools...they were a mess and it was not easy to find what I was looking for. I found this 3 drawer organizer at Walmart for $6.00. I also bought a container of zip-lock baggies to organize all her different beads, pony-holders etc...

Bottom drawer is tools
Brushes, Combs, Clips, and a new beader I picked up at the hair store for $1.00

Middle Drawer
Barrettes, hair decorations (I call them hair balls lol, what's the name for these?)

Top Drawer
Beads, Elastics, Pony holders
As you can see J picked out some hearts and pink beads for Valentine's day :)

Just a little look at what's to come!
