LUSH Review "Bombardino" and "Rose Jam"

Lush Review

Got a package in the mail today!!! My order from LUSH!
I am going to break up this review into 3 parts so I can devote enough space to each product because they are just too fabulous and 1 post was not enough!

Product #1 Bombardino

I have tried bath bombs in the past and I really enjoyed them but this was my first experience with a LUSH bath bomb and wow!

This bath bomb was described as a Lemon-Cheesecake type smell, with Sicilian Lemon Oil and Vanilla. It's like that but not sickly sweet... if you made lemon cheesecake into an alcoholic drink it would smell like Bombardino (to me)

Though smaller than the other Bomb from my order, it's pretty good sized. I have a very large "garden" tub in my bathroom (and yes, it's yellow) and it really filled the whole tub.

I ran a tub full of very warm water and dropped in the Bombardino Bomb.... it started melting and the room filled with the delicious lemony scent. Look at the layers! The bath water turned a honey-yellow color and was filled with moisturizing oils.

There are little bits of Cocoa butter are imbedded in the Bomb and they slowly melt into the water. The oils moisturize your skin as you soak.

I felt so relaxed in the warm tub full of rich oils... I hardly wanted to get out... and like a child, I waited until my fingers got wrinkly before getting out of the tub!
It's been a few hours since my bath and my skin is feeling so soft and still smells like the Bombardino Bomb. I love it!

I will be putting this bomb on my Christmas list! They also have some awesome gift sets I'd like to buy for a couple of loved ones this Christmas!

 Product #2 Rose Jam

Description: A decadent, rosy shower gel made with vanilla pod infusion, goji berry juice and nourishing argan oil, Rose Jam leaves your skin soft, hydrated and sweetly-scented.
Lathering up with this shower gel is a truly indulgent way to wash!

I love the smell of roses. I have been looking for a product with a nice rose scent but had found a rose scent I really liked until now. Most rose scents seem to have an older, "perfumey" type smell and really miss the mark of how a fresh rose should smell.

Rose Jam is said to smell like roses and vanilla and maybe it's just me but I smelled roses and a light honey scent. If you have smelled it, let me know if you thought it smelled a bit like honey also!
I love the scent. Right on with this one!

The shower gel is not really thick as you can see, but a little goes a long way. I put the amount you see above onto a bath puff and had way too much. I have a thing about using too much product....but believe me when I say a little Rose Jam will wash your whole body.

Rose Jam left my skin feeling soft and smelling sweet and fresh. Love it!

Rose Jam Contains Sicilian Lemon Oil which is said to clarify skin and brighten your mood!!

OH and it's only available until December 25th!! So don't wait to treat yourself!

Big Thanks to LUSH for allowing me to review their products!!!

Honesty in Reviewing

I have seen a couple of videos recently from reviewers talking about how "real" they are how some other's are "fake" because they only post positive reviews. Then, the other day a company asked me, "Do you ever do negative reviews?" so I thought I would share my philosophy on the issue.

The truth is no, I have never written a completely negative review. If a company asks me to review a product and I absolutely do not like the product I simply do not post a review. If I like some of the products, I review those and leave the products that I did not like. If the product was okay then I review it and explain the aspects that I did not like. I have never had any serious issue with a product I was reviewing, no major defect or adverse re-actions but if that ever happened I would definitely let you all know about it.

Do I feel that I am being FAKE? No. I try to promote what I love instead of bashing what I hate both in life and in reviewing and blogging. I let you know what worked for us and what we feel are the best products out there.

It's also important to realize that worked for us may not work for you, especially when some products are designed for a specific hair type. Many products, however, are very versatile and will work for any hair type and sometimes for multiple purposes, like Argan or Coconut oil, for example.

If you ever want to drop me a line and say "hey Jennifer, have you tried product X or Y? And how did you feel about it" I will let you know what I thought about it, maybe even share it on the blog about why I had issues with the product(s).  Just send me an e-mail!

~Much Love and Blessings~

Edge Maintenance

One of our facebook followers asked the following question: How do you grow back edges Healthier?

It seems to me that when hair health is struggling the first place that is starts to show is the edges. I know that's the case with Jamilah. We are currently working on improving her edges too.

The biggest reason people (with Natural Hair) lose there edges? Traction Alopecia. Alopecia means balding or baldness. Traction is basically tension put on the hair. Putting too much tension on those fragile edges can do great damage cause hair to break off and even cause balding.

Here's a few things to try:

  • Put less pressure on your edges. No more tight braids, twists and tight buns and pony tails. While you are growing edges back try to avoid styles that put pressure on the edges. You could try wearing a funky head wrap or cloth headband if the damage in the front is very noticeable or for a style that is easy on your hairline.

  • Use a satin pillow case and/or satin sleep bonnet. The slip of satin creates less friction on the hair while you sleep then other materials like cotton. The more you can "baby" your hair the better.

  • Use healthy hair products. Using deep conditioners and healthy hair oils and treatments can help improve you hair condition.

  • Lay off from blow drying and flat ironing as much as possible. Again, less stress on the hair is best right now, "pamper" your hair all you can!
Hope these tips help, That's what we are doing right now to help Jamilah grow her edges back.

***Please note: This is no substitute for a professional opinion... Alopecia can have many causes, it's a good idea if you are experiencing Alopecia to speak with a medical professional.

Here are some links that might help also!

I hear a lot about Castor Oil but I have not tried it myself!

If you have any tips, ideas, or links that might help go ahead and leave a comment below!!!

Thanks Ya'll~

Beehive Hair Company Review

Created by an Atlanta stylist since 1994; Beehive Hair Company products were born in 2007 for clients with curly, coarse, and natural hair. Simple and effective, each and every product is versatile, a minimum of 82% organic, vegan, paraben, gluten, and cruelty free. Beehive Hair products are completely safe for the entire family and perfect for color and chemically treated hair.

" Curly hair is so much fun. It's like a party on your head!" ~ BHC client

cre'me cleanse - non sudsing shampoo alternative for curly, coarse, natural hair

Cre'me cleanse is simply a hair cleanser in cream form. It does not lather like a liquid cleanser, but instead gently froths.
Cre'me cleanse contains peppermint extract to help remove dirt and debris from scalp without removing hair's vital moisture.
Can also be used as a light conditioner for those of you with fine, limp, or oily hair.
Cre'me cleanse contains no parabens, sulfates, hair softening chemicals (sometimes found in fabric softeners), and is vegan, gluten, & cruelty free.

Ingredients: organic aloe juice, cetearyl alchohol, castor oil, stearalkonium chloride, hydrolysed wheat protein, and pro-vitamin b5

Our Experience: After thoroughly wetting her hair I smoothed the Crème Cleanse through Jamilah's hair. I liked the peppermint smell, peppermint always reminds me of clean and Christmas lol. Maybe a perfect Holiday gift? But the peppermint scent is great to use on the whole family because I know the males in my house always dislike when I hand them flowery or sweet scented products.
The products said it gently froths but I didn't notice any frothing in Jamilah's hair, it smoothed through like hair lotion. I massaged it into her scalp and kind of dragged it through to her ends. I ended up using quite a bit of product, maybe twice the amount of the picture above because her dry hair seemed to want to soak up the product. She rinsed her hair and it felt great. Her hair was not feeling stripped or "squeaky" clean but cleansed and refreshed.

I love that it's all natural. I love that it can be used for everyone in my household with curly, natural hair. It's also vegan and cruelty free!!!

Condition - vegan rinse out conditioner for curly, coarse, dry, damaged, natural hair

Condition is an amazing rinse-out conditioner perfect for curly, coarse, dry, chemically treated , and natural hair. Condition absorbs into the hair cuticle providing essential moisture to the hair and rinses clean leaving no residue or build-up that can weigh hair down. Condition is vegan, free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrance, and harsh irritants.

Our Experience: After rinsing Jamilah's hair we blotted the excess water from her hair and smoothed through the Conditioner. This product smelled very nice to me, I smelled rosemary and some kind of mint in this product as well. It's not a heavy heavy conditioner, not exactly light either. We left the product in Jamilah's Hair for 5 minutes and she rinsed. Her hair was soft and smelled very nice. There wasn't the "slip" you get with products that add chemicals and silicones but it's much better for your hair.
I liked this product for an everyday (or every wash) conditioner. It's also Vegan and cruelty free and natural! Awesome! Good stuff!

Natural Hair Cre'me, luxurious hydrating leave in butter for coarse, curly, natural hair. Great for moisturizing dry skin too.

A luxurious super rich moisturizer for hair & skin.
Ingredients are simple & sweet : coconut oil, Shea butter, sweet almond oil, avocado butter, & essential oils for scent.
An essential product for curly, coarse, textured, and distressed hair. With regular use, hair becomes softer, shinier, curls actually curl - not frizz!, and distressed hair becomes more manageable.
Cre'me does double duty as an amazing body cream on hands & cuticles, legs and great for overworked feet!

Our Experience: What is this cream Not good for? It makes a great dry skin cream, especially for people with dry skin and eczema like Jamilah. Nice clean scent not particularly sweet or too strong. I also used the to moisturize Jamilah's ends and seal the moisture in. THEN I used this cream to twist Jamilah's hair. (Yes, she is crazy about twists right now!) Great product.... awesome versatility! I love products that can be used multiple ways!

After using this collection of products from Beehive Hair Company Jamilah's hair looked so healthy and shiny. I know that it will take some time to truly get her hair back to health but this product definitely helps to improve the look of dry frazzled hair, and with time, the condition also!

Some other products we tried from Beehive Hair Company

Literally dozens of uses.....
Dry lips - ✔; cracked cuticles - ✔; dry elbows - ✔; sore nose from endless blowing - ✔;
funky feet - ✔; crazy flyaway hair driving you crazy - ✔✔✔
Balm is great to stash in kids school bags, perfect for purses, gym bags, and travel.

Ingredients: sweet almond oil, beeswax, Shea butter, coco butter, jojoba oil, evening primrose oil, avocado butter, vitamin E, rosehip oil, aloe oil, neem oil, citrus essential oil blend.
As always - paraben, petroleum, gluten, & cruelty free

Our Experience:

Balm is good in that it can be used for soo many things. I get super dry lips this time of year that literally crack-open, so painful. I used balm in a large crack and it was healed by the next day!! Also used it for my elbows and cuticles and I can see using it much more.

My only issue with BALM isn't really a big deal but I did find it to be quite firm. That's good in that it won't like melt if you have it in your purse or bag but I did find it a little difficult to apply. I found that my finger temperature would not melt the balm so I needed to scrape a little out and apply a thin layer. On my lips the balm melted quite nicely (be sparing when it does melt a bit a little goes a long way!) and on my skin a little massaging melted it nicely into my skin. Don't let this keep you from purchasing BALM however, it's well worth the price and this minor detail.

We also like:

Nourish Moisture Spray

Nourish Face & Body Gel

Which we tried and enjoyed but did not see posted on the Etsy Page!

Thanks so much to Elizabeth Liversidge from Beehive Hair Company for allowing us to review her products and providing products for an up-coming giveaway!!!

STAY TUNED FOR THAT!!!

Why I will never use the flat iron again

I have struggled for years to get my daughter, Jamilah, to embrace her natural hair. At home, she seems fine with her lovely curls but as soon as she goes out in public her hair is immediately thrown into a pony or bun or hidden under a hat.

Jamilah always wanted to straighten her hair, though she did not want it chemically relaxed she would ask to flat iron it and I would generally refuse. I tried a few methods to make her hair less curly (such as banding) but it never seemed straight enough for her.

I am not sure where the desire came from but I did notice that some comments she received (right in front of me!) about her natural hair were far from positive. Even some of her family with relaxed hair would ask what was "wrong" with her hair or why it was not "done." They comments led her to feel like her natural hair was a "mess" and that for her to look "neat" and "pretty" she needed straight hair.

When Jamilah turned 12 she wanted to start caring for her own hair. She didn't want to take all the time necessary to detangle her hair properly and would rip a brush through her hair and pull it as tightly as she could into a ponytail until the front began to look a bit fuzzy and we realized she was damaging her edges.

I gave in. When a hair company introduced a new "natural hair" line and sent us heat straightening products I decided to flat iron her hair. I had tried flat ironing her hair on a rare occasion before but it never looked very straight and it was kind of pointless. This product (along with my CHI flat iron, which I love for my hair) made her hair completely straight! She really liked it and well, if she is happy, I was okay with it. Eventually though she did not want to go out unless her hair was ironed. "Once in awhile" turned into every day. The front of her hair for shorter. Her ends looked frazzled. When I tried to do a "wash and go" on her hair her curl pattern was changed, mostly on the ends. Some ends looked straight! eeek!

I don't think Jamilah truly believed me about the damage until she saw a family member who she had not seen for awhile and the first thing they said was, "what happened to her hair!!" Sadly I admitted that we had damaged her hair by not caring for it properly and using a flat iron too much.

I do not plan on using a flat iron on Jamilah's hair again. Not that I am telling everyone that it's bad for them to ever use a flat iron. For Jamilah, however, it was definitely over-used and depended-on and was not good for her.

We are now trying to repair Jamilah's hair and it's going to take some time. We will be documenting our journey BACK to healthy hair here and on our Youtube. I also want to work on the root of why she feels like straight hair is somehow better and continue encouraging her to embrace her natural hair. Now that she is a tween I am hoping to try some more "grown-up" styles that will make her happy and keep her hair Natural and Beautiful.

I am not writing this to campaign against flat ironing or persuade you not to use them. I am here to say that flat ironing did not work for us. Jamilah's type 4 mixed hair was too sensitive for all that heat, even with the protective products we used. Really it's not about the flat iron at all, for me it's more about the motivation to flat iron in the first place. To wear a different style now and again, probably not so bad. To hide your natural hair on a daily basis for whatever reason, maybe not so good.

I can't say I understand how Jamilah feels. I wash my hair, de-tangle and maybe throw in a little gel and go and no one seems to have anything to say about it. It's not considered revolutionary or making any statement for me to wear my natural hair. When I wear my natural hair no one asks why my hair is not "done", asks me what's wrong with my hair or asks to touch it. Friends and family don't encourage me to chemically change to composition of my hair.

What I do know is, Jamilah is beautiful. She is a beautiful blend of Sudanese, Scottish, Irish and Native American. She was born beautiful and she is beautiful just the way she is. Every bit of her was created to be just perfect the way it is and I would want nothing more than for her to realize her true, natural beauty. And that's why I will never help her change that again..... whether chemically or with a flat iron.

Peace~ Love~ Blessings~ Jennifer

Obia Natural Haircare review and giveaway!

Keeping with our mission of better hair health
we are reviewing some great hydrating and moisturizing products from Obia Natural Haircare!

Jamilah started out with straightened hair
(for the very last time! more on that in my next blog!)

Product #1

  Coconut & Shea Shampoo Bar

(our bar was white in color this picture is from the website, I did not get a chance to snap a pic before J jumped in the shower with it)

This rich moisturizing shampoo will leave your hair soft, conditioned, and hydrated.  Shea butter deeply moisturizes and repairs damage to hair and scalp, while coconut oil protects hair from heat and chemical damage

Jamilah washed her hair with the Coconut & Shea Shampoo bar. When she first saw the bar and heard it was shampoo she seemed all confused lol. She was surprised however, at how simple it was to use. She first wet her hair completely then use the bar directly on her hair until her whole head was lathered. She washed from root to tip gently moving the shampoo through her hair being careful not to cause tangles and knots. She made sure to cleanse her scalp well, massaging the Coconut and Shea shampoo into her scalp with her finger tips and not her nails. She then rinsed her hair, she said it rinsed out very easily.

Her hair did not feel like it often does with a typical shampoo, it was not dry and wasn't badly tangled. We both liked the smell and convenience of the bar shampoo and were impressed with the ingredients! It was a shock to see such a great lather from something that is sulfate free and full of natural oils!!

(Ingredients: Saponified Oils of Coconut, Palm, Castor bean, Safflower; Shea Butter, Vegetable Glycerin, Purified Water, Rosemary Essential Oil, Sorbitol, Soybean protein, Sorbitan Oleate, Fragrance)

Here is J after her shampoo!

As you can see you can already see her curl pattern (particularly in the bottom section) before we did any detangling or combing of any sort!

Product #2

Directions for use: Use on wet or dry hair.  Rub a quarter size amount between your hands and apply to your hair.  Style as desired.  pH balanced Curl Moisture Cream seals in moisture and minimizes frizz by smoothing and closing the cuticle.

I took a about a quarter sized amount as the directions suggested.... I had to control myself as I tend to use too much product and t always seems like the suggested amount is not enough for Jamilah's hair. I was very surprised to find this was not the case with the curl moisture cream! I smoothed the cream through her hair and de-tangled it all with my fingers!
The smell is nice, not too strong or too sweet just fresh and nice! I liked that you can use this cream to seal in moisture without having to use heavy oils. Very good cream!!

By the way every product has at least 1 video about the product and how to use it!

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol, Vitis vinfera (Grape seed) Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Argania spinosa (Argan) oil, Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Arctium lappa (Burdock Root), Lavandula officinalis (Lavender) Oil, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Glycine soya (Soybean) Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Oil, Fragrance (Parfum).

Product #3

Directions for use:  Use on damp or wet hair.  Apply a generous amount on the palm of the hand and rub hands together.  Style hair as desired.  Use to define curls, to smooth edges, or to aid in up-do styles.  Curl Enhancing Custard defines and conditions hair leaving it soft, shiny, and deeply moisturized.

I smoothed this through Jamilah's hair and used a Denman brush to smooth her hair and define her curls. I used a bit more of this product than I did the cream, ok quite a bit more lol! I used it around her hairline to both moisturize and help hide her broken edges in the front. At first I was like "what did I do?" her hair had a little bit of white to it in areas where I seemed to use a little too much....but no worries....it dried completely clear!!
The custard really made her curls pop back up! awesome!

This product has a gentle clean scent also. very nice!

Ingredients: Purified water (Aqua), Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Vitis vinfera (Grape seed) Oil, Argania spinosa (Argan) Oil, Carbomer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Vegetable Glycerin, Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Xantham Gum, Fragrance

Product #4

Use daily to moisturize your hair and scalp, or to refresh your style. Infused with argan oil, rose oil, and vitamin E

I used this on Jamilah's hair both after pumping up her curls and putting a headband on and again the next day to refresh her hair. This spray has a very light rose scent to me but it's not strong or over-powering. I really like it. The spray is light and refreshing to the hair. Unlike some of J's detangling type sprays that can be thick and weigh hair down this product is light and helps boost her curls while also adding hydration. So you're not only using these products to style but also treat the hair at the same time.... which Jamilah's hair surely needs right now!!

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Vegetable Glycerin, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Oil, Rose Oil, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Soybean Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Fragrance (Parfum).

Here she is!!! Her hair looking healthy, curly, shiny!!

products are natural, cruelty free and vegan!
(very important to Jamilah as she is a vegetarian!)

I also wanted to add:

"On Purpose" t-shirt by SaMon review

“On purpose” is a movement. It embraces the idea that we live life on purpose and we wear our hair on purpose. It represents all women of different shades, cultures and ethnicities; who demonstrate confidence, beauty and are intentional in how we choose to wear our hair. ~Samon Smith

Love this t-shirt!!
It's very soft cotton and more of a fitted feel to this t-shirt.
Jamilah is modeling a size M.
I love the look of these shirts and the inspiration behind them!

Here is what the creator had to say concerning the inspiration for the "On Purpose" movement

I have always wanted curly hair, even when I was a young girl growing up. My mom even got me a Jerri Curl!  lol  I was so excited the first day we got it.. I put so much water in my hair it became a afro!! lol
For years it was a mess.. As I got older my mom allowed me to get a relaxer. For over 30 years of my life I have always had one.  I never knew what my natural hair looked like or what it could ever do. When the relaxer grew out, I had new growth -  it was so dry..

To make a long story short, I decided to go all the way and not put that relaxer in my hair.  I was bold the day I revealed my natural hair (before the reveal, I wore a wig to grow my hair out),

My transition was the best thing that I have ever done.  When I went to work on that Monday.  I male  friend of mine stated, "Why are you wearing your hair like that?"  I was like "What do you mean, this is who I am".  At that point I was not happy, I knew from that moment, that I do NOT have to give an explanation of why I do what I do to my hair, that God has put on my head!

The way I look is On Purpose, This style and look is not an accident.  I know who I am and I know what I am doing when I get up in the mornings and put my fingers through my hair.

Then not to long after that, the idea of creating this shirt came about and my purpose was to make a statement. Helping ladies to not feel embarrassed of what they have been born with and only to embrace it.

Love it!! Thanks so much to SaMon for allowing us the review her t-shirts!!
